🔗 Share this article 2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game. While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games. A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim. The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. But, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times. A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs. Tracking the Tadpole Trend To understand this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots. The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025. This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced. Designing for a Sticky Tongue Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers. Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game. Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes. A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer. On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet. If these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
