Ex- FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

The former director's attorney filed the plea representing him in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for several reasons including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was indicted shortly after Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the magistrate they planned to file several petitions to dismiss the case before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's proceedings was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his investigation into an additional political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he grasped the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the judge.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was fired about several months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the moment, the director was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a private email server. Charges against Clinton were never brought, leading to negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by stating he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and delay" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey published to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"We have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."

"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
