This Horror Movie's Peculiar Finale Explained

If you're looking for a slasher-horror movie that offers guilty pleasure while making you wince, chances are Bone Lake is on your attention. A recent scary film from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan hit theaters on the third of October with an absurd premise and a provocative name to suit.

Note: Plot details ahead for the ending of Bone Lake.

A Mix of Humor and Darkness

With a name like Bone Lake and an initial moments featuring characters sprinting stark naked through the forest—only to be shot with a bow in sensitive areas—one can guess there's ample comic relief in the film. Moreover, the movie's conclusion, which portray the protagonists looking worse for wear yet chuckling madly together, exude a feeling of dark humor.

It would be necessary to find something to laugh about, too, if you went through what the character Diego and Sage face in Bone Lake. A pair full of partnership troubles from the get-go—lack of communication, unfulfilling intimacy, an unfair burden of financial responsibility, etc.—their bond is put to the test when another duo, Will and Cin, invade their romantic weekend.

A Sinister Shift

Seemingly at the start to be a contrast of opposites between the duos—Sage and Diego are awkward and everyday people, whereas Cin and Will have a rich, lavish way of life and seem to be kissing on any handy location—takes a dark turn as the weekend unfolds. Will and Cin prey upon Sage and Diego's doubts in their union. They circulate falsehoods and gossip about the protagonists, stating to be aware of an affair and further conflicts.

These insecurities burst in the most monumental way conceivable when Sage and Diego discover that Will and Cin are not simply here at Bone Lake by mistake: they are the owners and have been enticing couples to the estate in order to persuade them to stray on their partners. Why? Since Will and Cin are actually related by blood. Subsequent to their forbidden relationship was discovered by their parents and they were split apart unwillingly, they chose to take revenge on all others (including their parents). If the people condemned them only for their desired relationship, then they'll fight back at the world. Cin and Will's aim is to hold up a mirror to all the duos they ultimately end up murdering, in an attempt to show that their bond is no less real (or wrong) as the connection of these different pairs they try to break up.

Surprising Bonding

Yet, what Cin and Will don't take into account is that Diego and Sage, regardless of their lack of communication with one another, do care for and cherish each other. It required having a murderous couple try to end their relationship and kill them to understand it. If that sounds grim, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's style is more camp than genuine horror.

The story ends with Sage and Diego working together to escape Cin and Will's deadly plans. What's interesting is that while, at the beginning of the movie, you perceive a huge gap in the partnership between Diego and Sage in relation to Will and Cin, by the conclusion, Bone Lake turns it upside down. Will and Cin go their own ways to pursue Diego and Sage, but Diego and Sage are communicating better by this point. They join forces to butcher the character Will with a cutting device. They after that confront the character Cin, who meets her grisly end at the depths of Bone Lake's body of water—but just before the character Diego retrieves the wedding ring intended for the character Sage that Will had taken and given to Cin.

Aftermath

Following the events of their double murder, drenched in gore and flesh, Sage and Diego are seated on the edge of a boat. Paradoxically, this is the nearest they've connected since the start of the film, since all their romantic problems have been revealed for each of them to see, and all they have remaining are their battered and bruised bodies. To affirm their fresh bond and deep connection of one another, the character Diego leans over to place the engagement band on Sage's hand and, when she looks to view it in the sunlight, the pair begin to laugh.

One can easily to grasp the cause: When, the character Will asked for marriage to Cin, it was a picturesque, loving scene. However, when Diego follows suit for Sage, they've recently gotten away from a terrifying experience. Nonetheless, Diego's marriage offer to Sage is free from deceit, only the understanding that they've come out of the worst ordeal of their existence and, following all that, they still desire to share the future together together.

Creator's Insight

But, as director Mercedes Bryce Morgan notes, the finale is not a guarantee of a fairy-tale ending for Diego and Sage.

"After enduring that scenario with another person where you face a murderous bloodbath, how do you emerge from that? How do you act as a individual? Thus I wanted to capture all of the moments there together where it's this elation of 'thank God' and 'are we getting what we've dreamed of, but what in the world transpired? How in the world do we do from here?' And then that sinking in of the situation of 'what does that mean for us {now|today|from
